Ecosia works in close partnership with Microsoft Bing to deliver search results and ads. This guide will take you through how to set up and run ads on Ecosia through the Bing advertising network.
Step 1: Set up a Bing account
Log in or create your own account on Bing Ads. Ecosia is part of the Microsoft & Yahoo syndicated search partner network, so you need to sign up here to advertise on Ecosia.
Step 2: Create a campaign
Tip: To easily create and manage your campaigns you can download the Microsoft Advertising Editor.
Here you can create your campaign and select the target audience and location. You can also import data directly from your Google Ads Account.
To create a new campaign from scratch:
Click on “create campaign”.
Choose the goal of your campaign from these options:
When asked “What kind of ads do you want to run for this campaign?”, choose “Search ads”
Enter a campaign name, the daily budget you want to spend and information about who you want to reach. Then click “save and go to next step”.
Step 3: Create Ad Groups
Enter the URL of your website to get Ad Group and keyword suggestions (not mandatory).
Enter a Ad group name.
Step 4: Select keywords
On the same screen as in step 3, enter target keywords that will trigger your ad. To learn about keyword match types, please click here.
When you are finished, click “save and go to next step”
Step 5: Create ads
Define Titles and Descriptions and URL that will show in your ad.
As an option you can also create Ad Extensions to make your ads more eye-catching. Once you’ve completed this step, click on “save and go to next step”
Step 6: Define budget and set your bids
On the next page you can determine the overall budget for your campaign. You can also set your bidding strategy and adjust the bid for the Ad group you created previously.
After that your campaign is ready. The next step is to set the ad distribution in order to focus your campaign on the Bing and Syndicated Search Partner Network, which Ecosia is part of.
Step 7: Focus your campaign to the Syndicated Partner Network
The ad distribution option is found on the settings page for the ad groups.
To navigate to it click on “Ad groups” on the left sidebar.
Then click on your Ad group.
Now click on “Settings” on the left sidebar.
Under “other settings” you’ll find the option for ad distribution. Choose “Bing, AOL, and Yahoo syndicated search partners only”
Step 8: Launch campaign
Your ads will now run on Bing and its entire Syndicated Partner Network which includes Ecosia.
Step 9: Focus your campaign on Ecosia
If you wish you can exclude certain websites so that your ads are not shown on them. To do this you need to know where your ads are being shown. You can only determine this after your ads have run for a while.
To do this go to “Reports” on the top-right corner of the screen, then “Basic” and “Publisher Website”.
Now you will see a table with all sites that showed your ad.
You can download the list on the top-right corner under “Download”
Open the file, and copy all the website URLs in the first column. Don't forget to delete Ecosia from the list!
Go to the ad group setting tab (see Step 6). Go to “Exclusions” and copy the list in the first box to exclude the sites for this ad group, or to the second box to exclude these sites for the whole campaign.
