Founded in 2017 by twelve indigenous villages from the foothills of Mount Saran, the Gunung Saran Lester Foundation is our Indonesian partner organisation. The foundation aims to build on the success of Masarang, a nature conservation NGO that has been empowering local communities with sustainable, biodiverse, and lucrative alternatives to palm oil monocultures for over thirty years. Masarang’s zero-waste Tengkawang Factory as well as its Village Hub count among the first projects that our partner foundation will be implementing.
Concretely, this means that local villages will be able to earn a steady income without destroying the primary forest, and without being under any economic pressure to sell their land to palm oil companies. Moreover, the newly planted trees will form a great shield around Mount Saran, making the adjacent 25000 hectares of mountainous forestland inaccessible to destruction. The pristine habitat of many endangered animals, including the orangutang, will thus be protected.
